Anna Badyina and Oleg Golubchikov : Gentrification in Central Moscow – A Market Process or a Deliberate Policy ? Money, Power and People in Housing Regeneration in Oztozhenka, Geografiska Annaler Series B Human Geography, 2005, vol. 87B, n° 2, pp. 113-129

1The recent process of housing redevelopment in central Moscow is examined in the light of the theory of gentrification. The study is based on the case of Ostozhenka as an emblematic example of a large-scale transformation of a central residential neighbourhood into the most expensive quarter of central Moscow. Using data collected through interviews, archive inquiries and field surveys, the paper addresses the preconditions, dynamics and mechanisms of this socio-political process. It is argued that gentrification in Ostozhenka shares many features observed in the other large cities of the world but, as predicted by theory, is locally embedded. It has been a product of a complex interplay of the market pressure aiming to meet demands from Moscow’s successful post-Soviet economy and Moscow government’s entrepreneurial and pro-development strategy for the city centre regeneration. The government privileges market forces: it empowers them vis-à-vis the original population and allows them to circumvent conservation institutions, while the achieve profit is shared between the private and public sides. Whereas the physical improvement of the city centre signifies departing from the Soviet legacies of under-investments in the housing built environment, the growing socio-spatial polarization undermines the social achievements of the Soviet system and denotes the triumph of the neoliberal urban regime in Moscow.

Ayaga A. Bawah, Tukufu Zuberi : Socioeconomic Status and Child Survival in Southern Africa, Genus, 2005 (April-June), vol. LXI, n° 2, pp. 55-83

2Housing characteristics and household possessions such as a source of drinking water, type of toilet facilities, housing construction materials, and household asset possessions such as radio, television, and animals, reflect the socioeconomic status of individuals in settings where income data are lacking. These variables can be used (to create a composite index of poverty for measuring inequalities. It may be set that the type of houses individuals own and their assets reflect their socioeconomic status. The authors use these variables to create a poverty index and examine its association with childhood mortality using a multivariate regression model in three southern African countries. The results are reassuringly consistent with expectation. Their results suggest that the chances of childhood mortality decrease consistently with higher ranking on the socioeconomic status index.

John Bongaarts : Long-Range Trends in Adult Mortality : Models and Projection Methods, Demography, 2005 (February), vol. 42, n° 1, pp. 23-49

4In this article, the author had two objectives : (1) to test a new version of the logistic model for the pattern of change over time in age-specific adult mortality rates and (2) to develop a new method for projecting future trends, in adult mortality. A test of the goodness of fit of the logistic model for the force of mortality indicated that its slope parameter is nearly constant over time. This finding suggests a variant of the model that is called the shifting logistic model. A new projection method, based on the shifting mortality model, is proposed and compared with the widely used Lee-Carter procedure.

Stefan Buzar, Philip E. Ogden and Ray Hall : Households Matter : The Quiet Demography of Urban Transformation, Progress in Human Geography, 2005, vol. 29, n° 4, pp. 413-436

6During the last three decades, the household has become the focus of a wide range of sociodemographic processes, including the destabilization of traditional patterns of marriage, cohabitation and divorce; the growing fluidity of ties of kin and friendship; and increasingly complex transitions through the life course. However, these dynamics – which are often summarized under the common heading of the ‘second demographic transition’ – have been marginalized in the mainstream geographical literature. In this paper, the authors draw attention to the extensive, albeit fragmented, body of sociological, economic, feminist and geographical insights into the changing social geometry of the household. Recent developments in these domains have affirmed the pivotal role of the household in shaping the geographies of gender, home and everyday life. They underline the importance of households as agents of urban transformation, arguing in favour of the further incorporation of household demography into the interpretation of contemporary urban problems and trends.

Flavia Cristaldi : Commuting and Gender in Italy : A Methodological Issue, The Professional Geographer, 2005 (May), vol. 57, n° 4, pp. 268-284

9Commuting in Italy has always been addressed without regard to gender differences. Following the issuance of a comprehensive database by the National Statistical Institute, it is now possible to analyse gender differences in personal mobility for the first time in Italy. For their analyses the authors used Local Labour Systems (LLS) zoning in lieu of administrative zoning. LLSs are territorial subdivisions based on the principle of a self-contained labor market, and are widely used in Italy. This article also reports the results of a multidimensional data analysis aimed at highlighting relations between different gender-based commuting patterns and a set of variables (education level, age, household structure, occupational category, and position, etc.). The analysis points out gender differences in the relationship among commuting and socio-economic characteristics, reveals that these relationships are in turn related to the economic structure and geographical context of different regional labor markets, and suggests to analysts that they be sensitive to singular context when interpreting the meaning of gender differences in commuting.

C. Cindy Fan : Interprovincial Migration, Population Redistribution, and Regional Development in China: 1990 and 2000 Census Comparisons, The Professional Geographer, 2005 (May), vol. 57, n° 4, pp. 295-311

13Until recently, migration has had a limited role to play in China’s space economy because of central-planning logic and mechanisms. Mobility increases and economic restructuring since the 1980s, however, call for new conceptualizations of migration. Using interprovincial migration from China’s 1990 and 2000 censuses. The author analyses migration rates, migration effectiveness, population growth, net migration flows, and spatial focusing of migration. The analysis supports the notions that migration is an increasingly effective factor of population redistribution and that it as a strong relationship with regional development. While these relationships have been documented in many other parts of the world, they have been less well addressed in the case of China. Regional divergence in economic development during the 1990s was accompanied by a marked increase in inter-provincial migration and sharply concentrated migration flows, especially from relatively poor central and western provinces to the rapidly growing eastern region. These results suggest that migration theories that draw from experiences of capitalist economies may be of increased relevance to China.

Ursula Henz, Elizabeth Thomson : Union Stability and Stepfamily in Austria, Finland, France and West Germany, European Journal of Population, 2005, vol. 21, n° 1, pp. 3-29

18In this paper the authors test the hypothesis that unique effects of stepfamily composition on union fertility are confounded with differences between stepfamilies and couples without stepchildren in the risk of union disruption. They use birth and union histories from Fertility and Family Surveys in Austria, Finland, France and West Germany. The risks of a union birth and separation are modelled simultaneously, allowing for the potential effects of unobserved predispositions to have a child or to separate on the other event. They test hypotheses drawn from the value of first and second shared births to couples: Net of the couple’s combined parity, the birth risk will be greater if the child is (a) the first union, (b) the first biological child for one of the partners, or (c) the second child in a union.

Henk Huisman : Contextualising Chronic Exclusion: Female-Headed Households in Semi-Arid Zimbabwe, Tijdschrift voor economische en sociale geografie, 2005, vol. 96, n° 3, pp. 253-263

19A wealth of primary data allows for a presentation and analysis of the characteristics of the persistent economic and social exclusion process as experienced by a group of households which occupies a particularly difficult position in many studies on Third World poverty: female-headed households in rural Sub-Saharan Africa. After an introduction, in which attention is drawn to the highly politicised nature of the present-day debate on poverty, the role of gender relations in deprivation analyses is briefly reviewed. Next, following the presentation of relevant contextual data, the focus shifts to characteristics of marginalisation as experiences in resource-poor and drought-prone parts of Zimbabwe. The assessment concentrates on their access to resources, services, income and asset base. It sets out to discuss these aspects from a comparative perspective, i.e. it attempts to compare and contrast the key characteristics of their position with those of female-managed and male-headed units. A discussion on the crucial role of social networks for survival of these female-headed units and their prospects against the background of the deepening political and economic crises forms the conclusion of the paper.

Ali Kaouaci, Norbert Robitaille, Éric Guimond : Indirect Estimation of Life Expectancy at Birth in Subpopulations : An Assessment of the US Bureau of the Census Worksheet ADJMX, Genus, 2005 (April-June), vol. LXI, n° 2, pp. 35-53

20To estimate a life expectancy at birth for a small population is almost impossible by conventional methods. The US ‘Bureau of Census” developed a procedure to produce life tables for sub-populations, age-specific death rates of the overall population are used as standard, and every subpopulation provides annual number of death and its age structure. The authors’ objective is to assess the accuracy and reliability of the procedure by comparing its outputs with tables produced by statistics Canada, to decide on its applicability for both developed and developing countries. Their conclusions are that the procedure conceptually equivalent to indirect standardization, provides an acceptable estimate of life expectancy at birth, but the life table is not to be used.

Micere Keels, Greg J. Duncan, Stefanie Deluca, Ruby Mendenhall, and James Rosenbaum, Fifteen Years Later : Can Residential Mobility Programs Provide a Long-Term Escape from Neighbourhood Segregation, Crime, and Poverty ? Demography, 2005 (February), vol. 42, n° 1, pp. 51-73

21The authors examined whether the Gautreaux residential mobility program, which moved poor black volunteer families who were living in inner-city Chicago into more-affluent and integrated neighbourhoods, produced long-run improvements in the neighbourhood environments of the participants. They found that although all the participants moved in the 6 to 22 years since their initial placements, they continued to reside in neighbourhoods with income levels that matched those of their placement neighbourhoods. Families who were placed in higher-income, mostly white neighbourhoods were currently living in the most-affluent neighbourhoods. Families who were placed in lower-crime and suburban locations were most likely to reside in low-crime neighbourhoods years later.

Hill Kulu : Migration and Fertility : Competing Hypotheses Re-examined, European Journal of Population, 2005, vol. 21, n° 1, pp. 51-87

22Competing views exist concerning the impact of geographical mobility on childbearing patterns. Early research shows that internal migrants largely exhibit fertility levels dominant in their childhood environment, while later studies find migrants’ fertility to resemble more closely that of natives at destination. Some authors attribute the latter to adaptation, others claim the selection of migrants by fertility preferences. Moreover, short-term fertility-lowering-effects of residential relocation have also been proposed and challenged in the literature. This paper contributes to the existing discussion by providing an analysis of the effect of internal migration on fertility of post-war Estonian female cohorts. The authors use neous equations. Their analysis shows that first, the risk of birth for native residents decreases with increasing settlement size and the decrease is larger for higher-order parities. Second, it shows that migrants, whatever their origin, exhibit fertility levels after residential relocations similar to those of non-migrants at destination. The authors also observe elevated fertility levels after residential relocations arising from union formation. Their further analysis supports the adaptation hypothesis. They find non evidence on (strong) selectivity of migrants by fertility preferences.

Robyn Longhurst : Fat Bodies : Developing Geographical Research Agendas, Progress in Human Geography, 2005, vol. 29, n° 3, pp. 249-259

24Over the past decade geographers, especially social, cultural, critical and feminist geographers, have shown a keen interest in the mutually constitutive relationship between bodies and spaces. There is, however, one aspect of embodiment that has escaped geographers’ attention, that is, fatness. In this paper the author aims to develop some geographical research agendas that examine fatness as an important component of subjectivity. The paper begins by discussing some of the discourses surrounding fat and fatness, such as oppression, fat-phobia and fat acceptance. Secondly, there is an examination of some possible reasons why fat bodies have been for the most part absent from geographical research. Thirdly, the paper draws together the limited references that geographers have made to fat bodies, spaces and places. Finally, the paper offers suggestions for developing geographical research agendas that address fatness using a range of scales and theoretical perspectives.

Enrique López-Bazo, Tomás del Barrio and Manuel Artís : Geographical Distribution of Unemployment in Spain, Regional Studies, 2005 (May), vol. 39, n° 3, pp. 305-318

25This paper estimates the external shape of the regional distribution of unemployment rates and it studies intradistribution dynamics to analyse the extent of regional inequalities in unemployment rates in Spain over the last decades. It also assesses the contribution disequilibrium factors in giving rise to spatial differences in unemployment rates. Besides the traditional regression analysis, the effect of those factors on the whole regional distribution is estimated. Results reveal the existence of large differentials across the Spanish provinces in unemployment rates, the geographical distribution of which is characterized by strong persistence. Most of the characteristics of the distribution are induced by the equilibrium variables vanishes over the period under analysis, whereas the unequal distribution of amenities is the major responsible of spatial inequalities in unemployment rates at the late 1990s.

Yohei Murata : Gender Equality and Progress of Gender Studies in Japanese Geography: a Critical Overview, Progress in Human Geography, 2005, vol. 29, n° 3, pp. 260-275

28This paper examines gender equality in Japanese academic geography and provides an overview of gender studies undertaken in the discipline. First, the author points out the serious gender imbalance which exists in Japanese geography, through an examination of data on gender participation in academic societies, publications and faculty promotions. Secondly she provides an overview of geographical research on gender in Japan. Thirdly, she points out a major issues concerning gender studies in Japanese geography that the Japanese male geographer tends to misunderstand gender and ignore sexuality. In conclusion, she suggests that Japanese male geographers need to realize that gender is their own issue and that there is a need to conduct men’s studies in Japanese geography.

Ricardo F. Neupert, Virak Prum : Cambodia : Reconstructing the Demographic Stab of the Past and Forecasting the Demographic Scar of the Future, European Journal of Population, 2005, vol. 21, n° 2-3, pp. 217-246

29Cambodia went though 5 years of violent internal conflicts (1970-1975), including the spread of the American-Vietnamese war into the country, followed by four more years of brutal and chaotic Khmer Rouge government (1975-1979). The result was almost 2 million deaths. This article attempts to contribute to the reconstruction of the demographic history of Cambodia. This is done in three ways. First, by analysing scars in the pyramids corresponding to the recent past, present and future; second, by estimating major demographic events during the 1970s, especially excess deaths; and third, by comparing the size and composition of a simulated normal population with the real population.

Marianne E. Page and Ann Huff Stevens, Understanding Racial Differences in the Economic Costs of Growing up in a Single-Parent Family, Demography, 2005 (February), vol. 42, n° 1, pp. 75-90

32This article examines whether the economic consequences of growing up in a single-parent family differ from black children and white children. It is important to understand whether the costs differ across racial groups because although much of the rhetoric about poor single-parent families focuses on inner(city blacks, most children who live in such families are white. If the costs of living with only one parent vary across groups, then policies that are aimed at reducing the costs that do not acknowledge this variation will not target resources efficiently. The authors found that the economic costs of living with a single parent are larger for black children than for white children. Most of the discrepancy can be attributed to differences in remarriage rates, marital stability, welfare participation, and female labour supply.

Robert Schoen, Vladimir Canudas-Romo : Timing Effects on First Marriage: Twentieth-century Experience in England and Wales and the USA, Population Studies, 2005, vol. 59, n° 2, pp. 135-146

34Recent substantial declines in first marriage in Western countries have been accompanied by increases in the average age at first marriage. Since the period proportion ever marrying, PEM, is sensitive to cohort tempo changes, the recent fall in the PEM may simply reflect cohort delays in marriage. The importance of timing factors is examined in the light of twentieth-century experience of first marriage in England and Wales and the USA. Using a variance of the Timing Index developed in research on fertility, the authors measure cohort timing effects for marriage and calculate an adjusted PEM. After examining twentieth-century trends in nuptiality for men and women, they find substantial tempo effects on the period PEM. Adjusted PEM values show a real decline in marriage for cohorts, but that decline is considerably smaller than the one shown by the unadjusted figures. This is especially true for England and Wales, where the decline in marriage was much greater.

Ludi Simpson and Mark Tranmer : Combining Sample and Census Data in small Area Estimates: Iterative Proportional Fitting with Standard Software, The Professional Geographer, 2005 (May), vol. 57, n° 4, pp. 222-234

35The combination of detailed sample data with less detailed but fully enumerated marginal subtotals in the focus of a wide range of research. In this article the authors careful modelling of sample data, followed by Iterative Proportional Fitting (IPF). The modelling aims to estimate accurately the interaction or odds ratios of complex tables, which is information not contained in the marginal subtotals. IPF ensures consistency with the subtotals. The authors advance this work in three practical ways. First, they show the details small-area estimates of both counts and proportional distributions usually gain accuracy by combining data for larger areas containing the small areas, and they illustrate the multilevel framework to achieve these estimates. Second, they find that a general classification or socio-economic typology of the small areas is even more associated with the within-area interactions than is membership of the larger area. Third, they show how the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) can be used for IPF in any number of dimensions and with any structure of constraining marginal subtotals. Throughout, they use an example taken from the 1991 U.K. Census. These data allow them to evaluate various methods combining 100 percent tabulations and the Samples of Anonymised Records.

Kavita Singh, Unni Karunakara, Gilbert Burnham, Kenneth Hill : Forced Migration and Under-five Mortality : A comparison of Refugees and Hosts in North-western Uganda and Southern Sudan, European Journal of Population, 2005, vol. 21, n° 2-3, pp. 247-270

36Millions of people around the world live as displaced persons, often for lengthy periods of time. Little, however, is known about the correlates of health outcomes in displaced populations. This research article used data from north-western Uganda and southern Sudan to understand if and how forced migration and resulting residential arrangements impact under-five mortality for long-term displaced and corresponding host populations. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that over the long-run forced migration and residential arrangement did not significantly impact under-five mortality.

Ewa Tabeau, Jakub Bijak : War related Deaths in the 1992-1995 Armed Conflicts in Bosnia and Herzegovina: A Critique of Previous Estimates and Recent Results, European Journal of Population, 2005, vol. 21, n° 2-3, pp. 187-215

37In this article, the authors provide a critique of previous estimates of war-related deaths from Bosnia and Herzegovina and propose an analytical framework and a new estimate of such deaths. Their assessment is concentrated on civilian victims, whose death (or disappearance) can in a straightforward manner be linked with war operation. The estimate is based on carefully selected sources analysed jointly at the level of individual records, allowing for identity verification of victims, elimination of duplicates within the sources and exclusion of records overlapping between the sources. Although then can argue that their estimate is much better founded than any other estimate ever obtained, it is still incomplete and should be seen as work in progress.

Philip Verwimp, Jan Van Bavel : Child Survival and Fertility of Refugees in Rwanda, European Journal of Population, 2005, vol. 21, n° 2-3, pp. 271-290

38In the 1960s and 1990s, internal strife in Rwanda has caused a mass flow of refugees into neighbouring countries. This article explores the cumulated fertility of Rwandan refugee women and the survival of their children. To this end, the authors use a national survey conducted between 1999 and 2001 and covering 6,420 former refugee and non-refugee households. The findings support old-age security theories of reproductive behaviour: refugee women had higher fertility but their children had lower survival chances. Newborn girls suffered more than boys, suggesting that the usual sex differential in child survival observed in most populations changes under extreme living conditions.

Dominique Waltisperger, France Meslée : Crise économique et mortalité. Le cas d’Antananarivo 1976-2000, Population, 2005 (mai-juin), vol. 60, n° 3, pp. 243-275

Shuguang Wang and Lucia Lo : Chinese Immigrants in Canada: Their Changing Composition and Economic Performance, International Migration, 2005, vol. 43, n° 3, pp. 35-71

42Using landing records and tax data, this paper examines both the changing composition of the Chinese immigrants in Canada in the past two decades and their levels of economic performance. This research found that, in addition to a shift in origin, economic immigrants have been on the rise and other classes of immigrants have declined. This has been accompanied by a significant increase in their educational qualifications and proficiency in a significant increase in their educational qualifications and proficiency in a Canadian official language. Yet, despite their increased human capital, Chinese immigrants still experience very different economic outcomes in the Canadian labour market compared to members of the general population of Canada. For one thing, they have much lower employment and self-employment income than the general population. Moreover, these earning differentials hold true for all age groups, both genders, and Chinese immigrants from all origins. While their levels of economic performance increase with length of residency in Canada, this study suggests that it would take more than 20 years for Chinese immigrants to close the earning gaps with the general population. Evidence also suggests that Canadian-specific educational credentials are indeed worth more than those acquired in the immigrants’ country of origin, and are much better remunerated by Canadian employers.

David W. Wong : Formulating a General Spatial Segregation Measure, The Professional Geographer, 2005 (May), vol. 57, n° 4, pp. 285-294

43Most traditional segregation measures, such as the index of dissimilarity D, fail to distinguish spatial patterns effectively. Previously proposed spatial measures modifying D suffer from several shortcomings. This article describes a general spatial segregation index based upon the context of composite population counts, which are derived from grouping people in neighboring areas together to account implicitly for spatial interaction of groups across unit boundaries. The suggested spatial index can overcome the disadvantages of previous indices and can assess the spatial segregation of a region.
